From when it begun in the park, hip hop always spoke for the voiceless after it quickly settled on the path to address social injustice, crime and drugs. Hard or soft, hiphop got accepted but transition watered down lyrics, many sub genres emerged, say like ‘genge tone’ that is all porn and nonsense.
What Rabbit drooped ‘Wanjiga Nyinyi’ was not really expected today. Rappers have gone soft with many sliding the ‘genge tone’ way. Rappers known for barz like Juliani, where is he?
I thought he was one of the few rappers left who would pull this stunt but hell no. He is just sitting pretty and he is not the guy who ‘Wajinga Nyinyi’. He is the guy who did ‘Bahasha ya Ocampo’ but he had no guts to call out names like King Kaka did Waititu and Waiguru.
It must be noted that Juliani’s ‘Niko njaa/Utawala’ had elements of activism; it went ‘platinum’ on skiza tunes. But what more? Juliani was already following Boniface Mwangi, one of the ‘highly paid’ activists in Kenya.
They used proceeds from ‘Utawala’ song to organise ‘picnic’ protests, fattened their pockets but the saddest thing is how Juli lost his rhyme book after following @BonifaceMwangi became his day job. He no longer raps, he only tweets in broken sheng to peep at relevance.
But longevity of christian rappers is always questionable by the way. Cross Movement was a hot hiphop band but it didn’t remain relevant for long. Look at Holy Dave, he looks like a onetime famous time keeper in high school, he doesn’t look like he used to rap.
Nyash is now singing too much, his next release might even be on a Sisqo beat. He can be excused; he is not in that mood.
Octopizzo and Khaligraph are beefing on social media and making fun of each other. Abbass is doing what many Kenyan rappers do when they go abroad. Doing yoga and that thing involves too much meditation and insane imagination to associate with rap.
Just going abroad to follow a dream that started here is eating down rappers. Bamboo came back confused; he is still ‘jetlagged’ almost seven years since he came back. He is saved and ‘party time’ secular.
Again the fact that many Kenyan artists and gospel singers make money in political rallies puts them in a compromising situation to point fingers. They are paid by the tainted politicians. Bahati made money in Jubilee rallies and Willie Paul makes money from Governor Hassan Joho. You remember him with the ‘degree’ song?
Naiboi is a former rapper now singing ‘Naija songs’, Kristoff does nothing but party songs. May be some underground cat would do this but no one listens to them so the song would only hit in the studio.
So King Kaka of all the people, I mean Rabbit who had gone cooperate, he was sing bongo and party songs. He was hanging with top media slay queens in television shows. He is wearing suits and ties.
Kaka is supposed to be soft but then again this was predictable, he had hinted through some music video. He was bound to go ‘rogue’.
This was the opportune time for this considering it has been a dry spell of rhymes and any joker would just blow with nursery rhymes or a loose diss track to claim the throne like they always do.
Its a good way to be controversial, you ‘risk’ and become the talk of town. He said it and the people are with him. His ‘spokenword’ single has been received well.
He did it to redeem himself; he was struggling to juggle mic and office, rhyme book and checque book. He just told Kenyans what they say to each other in low tones. #Wajinganyinyi
