Members of the Kisii community have nothing to celebrate over Interior cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i’s big office in the government now for the ninth year running. If anything, during Matiang’i’s tenure, the community has suffered a lot ranging from being divided, senior officers losing plump jobs in government and above all, the community watching high unemployment cases under the watch of Matiang’i. Due to the frustrations the community has gone through under the leadership of Matiang’i, they now want the Kisii senator Sam Ongeri to take over the community’s leadership as the political kingpin.
Currently, Matiang’i is enjoying a little political support after he fell out with Kisii governor James Ongwae, Ongeri, Kisii women rep Janet Ongera, MPs Joash Nyamoko (North Mugirango), Vincent Kemosi (West Mugirango), Shadrack Mose (Kitutu Masaba), Alpha Miruka (Bomachoge Chache), Silvanus Osoro (South Mugirango), and members of the county assemblies from Nyamira and Kisii counties. In Nyamira county, Matiang’i enjoys support from three leaders, Senator Okongo Omogeni, women rep Jerusa Momanyi and Borabu MP Ben Momanyi. Already, the residents of Nyamira county are regretting for electing Omogeni as their senator Omogeni is accused of playing double political standards during the reign of the late governor John Nyagarama, and now during the tenure of Amos Nyaribo, for his own political survival.
Omogeni, Momanyi and Jerusa are accused of misleading Matiang’i on political matters, a factor that has made Matiang’i’s graph to drop drastically. The three whom Matiang’i uses to represent him during funerals and harambees chestthump that without going through them, none can access Matiang’i. Despite Matiang’i being the chief minister, his powers have not been felt when it comes to job opportunities of his own people. People thought that Matiang’i being Interior cabinet secretary, youths from the area would secure themselves jobs as security officers. Matiang’i will be remembered during his reign as a minister who saw many Kisiis holding senior positions sacked namely.
Names that come to mind here are Josiah Moriasi (Youth Enterprise Fund) Charles Ongwae (Kenya Bureau of Standards) and Daniel Manduku (Kenya Ports Authority). Matiang’i also allegedly fought and undermined the nw retired Chief Justice David Maraga after getting instruction from Uhuru Kenyatta for overturning 2017 presidential elections. Matiang’i’s name has been dragged into the row about division of late Simeon Nyachae’s family wealth. Many are terming Matiang’i a coward because he has not even declared which position he is aspiring for compared to other leaders from other communities who have declared their candidature for the coveted presidential seat.
