Three students from Egerton University were Monday, October 31, arraigned at the Milimani Law Court for obtaining millions of shillings from parents and candidates after promising to supply them with national exams leakage.
The suspects were released on a KSh 1 million bond or KSh 500,000 with surety of the same amount.
According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the three have been conning unsuspecting parents and students on social media such as WhatsApp and Telegram.
In a statement, DCI revealed that each group attracted a following of over 13,000 members, united under a promise of receiving leaked KCSE examination papers.
The social sites are reported to contain payment details for the papers, and members of the groups were prompted to pay following a detailed process to save on time.
The three who were operating at Egerton University in Njoro, Nakuru County, according to detectives, are said to have been living large, a lifestyle attributed to their illegal dealings.
Parents and candidates in need of the fake papers were required to part with a sum between KSh 5,000- KSh 20,000.
They were nabbed by sleuths attached to the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) who launched investigations into the sinister dealings of the varsity students.
“One of the masterminds, a fourth year student pursuing a Bachelor of Education (Mathematics and Physics) alias Professor Lenchodas was lured into a trap by the detectives on Thursday night and led them to his house in Njoro,” DCI said in a statement.
The arrested suspect led the sleuths to his two other accomplices, also fourth year students, one operating under the name Professor Ranchodas.
“During the raid detectives recovered six mobile phones, eight identity cards, and ATM cards all linked to fraudulent Telegram and Bank accounts” DCI added.
Class eight candidates are set to sit their KCPE exams starting November 28 to November 30, while KCSE is scheduled to run from November 21 to December 23.
