There is war at the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), pitting a team of old guards led by Secretary General Collins Oyuu and a team calling itself Knut Young Turks pressure group. The young Turks are pressuring the national office leaders led by Oyuu and Muuo Ndiku to come down from their tower of comfort and deliver for Kenyan teachers who are faced with a myriad of problems or vacate offices.
SG Oyuu, in a full-page article in one of the local dailies, answered several issues raised by the young and ambitious teachers as he concluded by begging for sobriety and ample time to sort out all the mess and revive the teachers’ union.
Young Turks, who are also aspiring leaders of the union, maintain that Knut’s future largely depends on imminent evolution, which will not be stopped by Oyuu’s camp of old and unprogressive leaders.
The group recently held a press briefing that caused disquiet and anxiety at KNUT’s head office chiefs after they claimed that Oyuu and his group were illegally installed by the retired regime of former President Uhuru Kenyatta to punish Wilson Sossion but not to fight for the plight of teachers.
The Young Turks accuse the Oyuu-led team of stifling and suffocating the teachers union. Collins Oyuu took over the reins of KNUT from Wilson Sossion, who stood with teachers firmly in every matter. The former SG, Sossion , was forced by the former government to resign because he was politically leaning toward William Ruto and was also embroiled in a protracted feud with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), which deregistered him as a teacher after he was nominated to parliament in 2013.
Oyuu has now been in charge for more than one year, but the only thing he has done since taking over from Sossion is pleading with TSC boss Nancy Macharia to reverse all transfers of teachers from one county to another, otherwise known as delocalization.
The troubled SG describes delocalization as the worst form of punishment administered to teachers across the country by the TSC.
