Police in Juja, Kiambu County have now imposed sanctions on Titanic Dam that is said to have claimed the lives of scores of revelers.
Juja sub-county police commander Philis Muthoni said no one will be allowed in the precincts of the water body after 6 pm as reports indicated that revelers often stayed there up to past midnight.
“We shall intensify police patrols in the area and ensure people do not stay there after dawn. We have collected many bodies of people who have drowned in that dam at night,” she said.
This comes as the latest victims, a man and a woman, drowned after their car plunged into the dam under mysterious circumstances on Tuesday night, January 17, 2021.
The couple, said to be lovers, were reported to have spent the evening together having fun inside their Nissan X-Trail next to the dam situated along Kimbo-Kiganjo Road about four kilometers off the Thika superhighway before tragedy struck around 9.30 pm.
Witnesses said the man who was on the driver’s wheel attempted to reverse the car, but appeared to change his mind and engaged drive gears before ploughing into the dam.
Muthoni said the two are yet to be identified and police are looking for family members as investigations continue.
She added that the woman was in her early 20’s while the man was in his mid 30’s.
The ownership of the car which was later pulled out of the water was also not immediately established.
Kiambu County fire and rescue employees told journalists that more than 50 bodies have been retrieved from the same dam since 2021.
“The area was once fenced off by the county government, but we do not know who later removed the fence,” said a diver who didn’t want to be named.
Residents narrated how merrymakers use the open space around the dam as a recreational area where booze and drugs are consumed with abandon, as well as sexual escapades.
Among the latest victims, the man was stark naked when he was pulled out of the water while the woman was half naked.
