The vicinity around Nakuru Level V Hospital was extremely jubilant after Margret Wairimu delivered 5 children, 4 girls and a boy.
28-year-old Simon Ndungu who plies his trade as a driver for 2NK Sacco is now a father of 6 children (5 girls and one boy) after his wife’s delivery.
The 25-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital on January 27th after she exhibited pregnancy complications at 6 months.
After her successful emergency Cesarean delivery on January 31st, Dr. Aisha Maina, the superintendent confirmed that it was the highest multiple birth ever in the facility’s history
“She was immediately admitted and specialists placed her under observation until January 31 when she progressed to labor. She underwent an emergency cesarean section,” said Dr. Aisha.
The newborns who are underweight and pre-term are currently under high care from medics at the hospital.
“The babies, who are in incubators, had immature organs,” said Dr. Maina.
Simon Ndungu revealed that his firstborn daughter is 4 years old. He says that he expected triplets, based on the prenatal scans, contrary to the five.
“I thank God for making me a father again. Many people wish to get children, but they are unable to for one reason or another. Some people steal newborns, others visit the witch doctors to get children,” he said.
“During the prenatal visits, scans conducted on the mother suggested that she was expecting triplets. It appears the extra two children couldn’t be seen under the scan,” he said.
“I had not prepared to be a father of five more children at once. Yes, I’m shocked by the new development, but happy nonetheless.”
He says that when his wife had gone into labor, he was transporting passengers from Nakuru to Nairobi.
He immediately handed the keys to the vehicle to another driver and rushed back to Nakuru to be with his wife.
“When I received a call informing me that my wife was due for delivery, I canceled the trip and returned to Nakuru,” he said.
Simon who is the breadwinner in the family, alongside his wife who is a housewife pleaded with well-wishers to come to his aid and assist him in raising the 6 children. He notes that on his meager matatu driver pay, he may be unable to sustain his family for long.
“Without help, bringing them up will be difficult for sure,” said Ndungu.
Simon Ndungu’s coworker admitted that the 28-year-old has been the cornerstone of his wife and child’s survival.
“He is very young but very responsible. We will support him as much as possible. Being a father of six with little income is not easy,” he divulged.
