Azimio grassroots leaders from Nairobi will meet on Sunday to finalize preparations for Monday’s mass action called by Opposition chief Raila Odinga.
The meeting, which will be held at a yet-to-be-disclosed location, will bring together Nairobi MPs, MCAs, youth, and women leaders.
“Tumeita mkutano ya grassroots leaders wote wa Nairobi including MCAs and MPs (We have called a meeting of grassroots of all leaders including MCAs and MPs),” a youth leader told the Star.
“We will first have a closed-door meeting then address a press conference once we are done,” he added.
This is even as seven ODM MPs asked Kenyans to keep off Monday’s mass action called by their party leader.
The lawmakers, addressing a press conference on Friday, said the country’s economic situation cannot be addressed by political confrontation.
Although elected on the ODM party ticket, the lawmakers said they will not be participating in the planned demonstrations.
“We equally urge our constituents to do likewise. We encourage those who are thinking to join the demonstrations to return to their normal economic and social activities, especially those who engage in farming, to take advantage of the current rains to plough and plant,” Suba South MP Suba MP Karoli Omondi said.
With him were Kisumu Senator Tom Ojienda and MPs Gideon Ochanda (Bondo), Mark Nyamita (Uriri), Paul Abuor (Rongo), Elisha Odhiambo (Gem) and Felix Odiwour alias Jalango (Langata).
Earlier reports had indicated that the Azimio coalition will over the weekend traverse Nairobi estates to mobilise supporters ahead of the march to State House.
Raila has called on his supporters to assemble in Nairobi on March 20 for a rally to reclaim his ‘stolen victory’.
Azimio’s leadership has already given Members of Parliament a go-ahead to transport more supporters from rural areas for Raila’s most consequential political move in recent history.
