Five family members died and four others seriously injured following a tragic accident that occurred on Saturday, May 8, 2021 along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

The incidence was confirmed by Coast traffic regional commandant Peter Maina who stated that the family was travelling from Mombasa to Nairobi when their vehicle collided head-on with a trailer which was headed to Mombasa from Nairobi.

The Commandant added that four other people were critically injured and had been rushed to Kinango District Hospital.

While confirming the incidence, Maina noted that there was an increase of accidents in the area. He urged motorists to follow traffic guidelines to avoid the loss of lives.

“We will
be meeting with owners of public service vehicles this weekend to inform them
of the new measures,” the police boss said.

The incident came barely a day after another accident had claimed the lives of five people while several others were seriously injured following a road accident in Mariakani, along the Kilifi-Mombasa highway.

The incident involved a trailer and a hearse which
collided head on, leaving two people dead on the spot.

Police Boss
Ezekiel Chepkwony said that three others succumbed to injuries at the Mariakani
hospital.

The National
Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) estimates that 3,000 Kenyans die from
road accidents every year.

Many of the
accidents occur over the weekends, with the hours 5pm – 8am being
particularly deadly.

A recent report
indicated that most accidents are attributed to human-related factors such as
speeding, reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, failure to use
helmets among others.
