Cash crunch pushing KPL clubs not to honor fixtures

Chemelil Sugar Football Club will not honour today’s premier league fixture against Bandari despite orders by the Kenyan Premier League that the competition is on as planned.

Club’s Manager Francis Baraza said they had written to KPL to call off the match since the club lacks the funds to make the long trip to Mombasa from Kisumu County.

The club says it has no money for lack of sponsors, they depend on funds from KPL and the Chemelil Sugar Company but both have shown that they lack the resources.

Chemelil is not the in financial crisis,  Sony Sugar are equally facing a cash problemsand may not honour their match in Machakos against Tusker.

Sony gave out a walkover in their previous fixture at home to AFC Leopards. Other premier league clubs showed solidarity with Sony for the league to be suspended as the financial crisis bites. Sony Coach James Nandwa revealed that they are  still waiting for response from the club management whether they will get a sponsor or not.

Nandwa has been away from the club in the build-up to today’s clash confirming speculations that Sony will hand three free points to Tusker. The former Harambee Stars coach is back in Nairobi and was spotted attending the midweek National Super League matches at Camp Toyoyo.

Should Sony fail to take to the field today, they will be a match away from being dropped from the league. According to rules and regulations governing the top flight league, when a club faces financial sanctions that could amount to Sh1.5 million for three walkovers then it should be relegated to National Super League.
