While many Kenyan can not afford a plate of boiled and stewed kidney beans mixed with fermented African corns, in short, GITHERI, at Sarova Hotels, the Five Star rated hotel has offered the donation to Frontline health workers at KNH and Mbagathi their top-notch delicacy.
Sarova Hotels donated ready-to-eat food to Covid-19 front line health workers at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), which the recipients have said to be rotten and stinking.
Did you see the delicious food that some Doctors cooked for their fellow healthworkers?
Your world class chefs could only come up with rotten Githeri and Rice? I must have missed it in your menu.
Sarova hotels Shame on you!— Gor Goody (@GorGoody) April 24, 2020
Sarova Hotels and Resorts, Kenya’s first indigenous hospitality company, has volunteered to provide food to frontline healthcare workers at both Kenyatta National Hospital and Mbagathi Hospital.
The offer by Sarova Hotels and Resort is in an effort to help the Government manage the Coronavirus pandemic that is threatening to stretch the limits of the country’s health facilities.
The program which will run for 30 days will see Sarova provide daily lunches to the more than 200 healthcare workers who are providing the most critical services to patients at the facility.
The move is a gesture by Sarova to say thank you and recognize the bravery and commitment of the heroes and heroines in the facilities who have put their lives on the frontline to lead the war to eradicate the virus.
The food was delivered by Sarova Managing Director Jimi Kariuki and received by Dr Evanson Kamuri.

While launching the exercise, Sarova Hotels and Resorts Managing Director Jimi Kariuki lauded the healthcare workers for their selfless devotion to save the lives of Kenyans during this trying period.
“As a Kenyan company, we will continue working with the Government to lend our support in the fight against this deadly virus from all approaches. It is indeed a trying time for humanity and in the end, we must all work together to flatten the curve.
It is very important that we recognize and encourage healthcare workers who are working flat out every day to save lives. We are privileged as a country to have dedicated healthcare workers who we need to support in every possible way”. Mr. Kariuki explained.
Most of the plates had a mixture of githeri (cooked maize and beans), potatoes and steamed rice, which is not the norm for such foods to be mixed in one plate in the Kenyan set-up. With other Kenyans on twitter trolling the 5Star rated food with the famous “mathogothanio'” from Kibandas.

Donation of foods during such times is a good gesture towards the fight against Covid-19, but it should not be a way of disposing expired foodstuffs, especially to the front line soldiers, the health workers.
Here are some of the replies and comments KOT had.

Sarova Hotels donated food to the frontline medics at KNH.
The medics and other frontline workers refused to be part of the mediocrity.
See the photo ops and what the contents were. Food was said to be smelling rotten.

While many were trolling the selfishness in the ‘good deed’ Sarova Hotels was showing to Kenyan medics, others were lauding the move and calling out trolls.
I think bashing Sarova for "donating Githeri" and calling it "food for the poor" is foolishness. The Hotel said it will be donating food for the next 30 days with different servings on the menu. If you think Githeri is for the poor, what have you donated? 🙆
