Three people were on Thursday Morning killed in a grisly road accident involving a Nissan Matatu and a canter along the Makupa causeway, Mombasa county.

The Hiace Matatu was reportedly on its way from Mombasa town to Kitui before it veered off its lane and rammed into the canter.

The 8 am incident caused a huge traffic snarl-up forcing police to call for a crane to remove the wreckage. The dead bodies were taken to the coast general hospital morgue.

Coast region traffic commandant Peter Maina traffic confirmed that the three people, two men and a woman, died on the spot while 5 others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

“Three people including the driver perished, the driver lost control and rolled down from his lane to collide with a canter that was on the other lane,” said Maina.

The Matatu involved in the accident is owned by Makueni Transporters Sacco, MATCO.

According to Abdalla Mohamed, an eye witness, the matatu driver was on a phone call before he lost control. He says this is the fourth time an accident is happening along the course way.

“If there could be rails to protect the vehicle, maybe it could not have rolled. We wish the government to install protection pillars to avert a similar kind of accident in future,” said Mohamed.

The Makupa causeway is under construction where the government is planning to erect a bridge. Once completed, it will ease the movement of vehicles coming in and out of Mombasa.

The causeway has become a death trap for motorists and pedestrians in recent times.
