Kenyan Jails Have 75Percent Youths

In a report compiled from 2017 by the office of the Chief Justice David Maraga indicate that
petty offenders are effortlessly sentenced and most likely to be jailed and capital offenders
are either acquitted, matters resolved outside the court or they successfully appeal against the
sentences.

In Kenya, innocent until proven guilty only functions in law schools and papers. Things out here are different, and youths are always guilty as soon as you set your foot on the streets.

Reports also revealed that 75% of the prisoners in Kenyans jails are between an age bracket of 18 and 35 years are minor offenders.

In the report, many petty offenders like insobriety, touting, traffic offenses, walking at night etc etc… who are not able to raise Ksh5, 000 to pay fine are locked in jails while murder suspects walk freely since they can afford to pay to be bailed out.

The report that is on the desk of Mr. Null and Void, CJ Maraga suggests that Judiciary should deny murder suspects bonds until proven innocent as they are security threats to the public especially the witnesses.
