Socialite Governor Anne Waiguru hopeful that she is a frontrunner in the 2022 presidential race

Socialite Governor Anne Waiguru hopeful that she is a frontrunner in the 2022 presidential race

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru is hopeful that she is a frontrunner in the 2022 presidential race, she told Citizen TV’s Newsnight show on Tuesday.

The Governor, who has been at the centre of controversies, attributed some of her woes to 2022 succession politics saying her opponents were keen on tarnishing her name owing to the possibility of being a strong candidate in a presidential race.

“Why is it that I am trending the whole day just because of coming here and it doesn’t happen to everybody.

It is because some people suspect that I am the frontrunner on matters of succession politics and that is not unique to me,” said Waiguru.

When asked whether she thought she was the frontrunner in 2022 presidential race, the Governor said: “I hope I am… ”

Also, Waiguru did not downplay any possibility of becoming a Deputy President in 2022.

When asked whether she would take a deputy slot, Waiguru said: ” I can’t dismiss or accept. It will depend on how politics will shape itself after the BBI(Building Bridges Initiative) and other things.”

The Kirinyaga County Boss also talked about the BBI and revealed that she was not taking sides on the matter.

“I do not have a preference. I will follow whatever changes Kenyans will want to be made on the constitution, whether through a referendum or parliament,” said the Kirinyaga County Chief.

Waiguru’s revelations in all appearances open the lid on why she has been closely associating with the ODM leader Raila Odinga.

Political pundits argue that perhaps she positioning herself as a potential Deputy Presidential candidate given that the Mount Kenya region might not produce a strong presidential candidate come 2022.

The 2022 presidential race has attracted several hopeful candidates with Deputy President William Ruto leading the list.

ODM leader Raila Odinga, though he has not yet declared his presidential ambitions, is also expected to be a candidate come 2022.

The ANC party leader and his Wiper counterpart Musalia Mudavadi have also hinted at being in the ballot.
