Kenya on Friday hosted a high-level delegation from the Government of Ireland, led by Minister Christopher O’Sullivan, responsible for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, as the country advances plans to expand its tourism sector ahead of its 2027 target of five million annual visitors.

Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, said discussions focused on leveraging international partnerships to diversify Kenya’s safari-plus offerings, enhance digital marketing, and develop adventure, cultural, and heritage tourism.

Ireland has emerged as one of Kenya’s fastest-growing inbound markets, ranking 23rd globally in improvements, highlighting its potential to become a key source of visitors.

CS Miano emphasised that learning from Ireland’s approach to heritage promotion and conservation will inform Kenya’s strategies for sustainable tourism development.

A core part of the discussions was the protection of Kenya’s vital water towers, including the Mau Forest, and the safeguarding of indigenous conservation initiatives.

By integrating environmental stewardship with tourism, the ministry aims to move beyond traditional safari experiences to offer adventure, cultural, and nature-based travel opportunities that benefit local communities.

“Through community empowerment, protecting our wildlife corridors, and upholding democratic values that make us a global destination of choice, we ensure that the Magic of Kenya remains for generations to come,” CS Miano said.

She added that strengthening international collaborations is central to enhancing the country’s tourism brand and competitiveness in the global market.

The engagement with Ireland is expected to accelerate knowledge transfer on heritage promotion, sustainable tourism practices, and marketing innovation, aligning with Kenya’s broader objective of positioning itself as a premier destination for diverse travel experiences.

By combining conservation, cultural promotion, and international collaboration, Kenya aims to ensure the long-term sustainability of its tourism sector while delivering immersive experiences to global visitors.
