The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned former Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government Dr. Fred Matiangi over allegations of publishing false information.

Matiang’i’s lawyer Danstan Omari has confirmed that his client will appear at the (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu Road on Tuesday, March 7 at 9:30 am.

A statement issued by Michael Sang, a senior Superintendent of police attached to the DCI Headquarters’ Serious Crimes Unit, had earlier noted that the DCI was investigating allegations of publication of false information regarding the alleged invasion and raid of the former CS’s home based in Karen on February 8, 2023.

“I have reasons to believe that you, Fred Matiang’i, the former Cabinet, Ministry interior and National Co-ordination connected to the offense or have information that would as me in my investigations,” Sang states in the summons s served at around 1:15 pm despite protests from lawyer Omari.

The DCI officer warned Matiang’i that failure to comply with the summons would constitute an offense liable to prosecution.

“I hereby compel you Matiang’i to appear before me at DCI Headquarters Kiambu Road at Mazingira House on February 22, 2023, at 9:30 am without fail. Failure to comply with the requisition constitutes an offense liable to prosecution,” Sang states.

The news comes after the former CS failed to appear at the DCI headquarters on Monday, March 6.

His lawyer, Danstan Omari, revealed that his client was not aware of the summons as the DCI did not follow the proper channel.

“He is not aware of any investigations on him but reckons those constitutional offices are at liberty to discharge their mandate; and that he, too has the right to follow due process as a citizen of this country,” Omari noted.

The former CS flew back to the country on Saturday night, March 4, following a two-week trip to the United Kingdom to attend to family matters.

This was met with heavy criticism from Kenya Kwanza politicians who claimed that Matiang’i sought refuge outside the country.

“He was called to record a simple statement but he decided to flee. Didn’t I tell you that these people were cowards?

“They came after us before the elections, but did we run? They arrested me and took away our property and we stayed put,” Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stated during a recent rally.

Currently, the High Court in Nairobi has orders stopping the police from arresting Matiang’i but the officers are allowed to interrogate or investigate him on any criminal offense.

The orders barring the police from arresting the Matiang’i who is currently out on Ksh200,000 anticipatory bail will remain in force until April 19, 2023.
