Yester evining, viscous protests erupted at the Manyani Maximum Prison in Taita Taveta County over the death an inmate.
Manyani Prisoners staged a protest after one of their colleagues who was ill passed on in what they termed as negligence.
The prisoner identified as Stephen Mwangi Kabanzu – had been ill for a while before fellow inmates insisted to the wardens to take him to hospital.
Manyani Maximum Prison Commander in charge Bison Madegwa has since denied claims that the prisoner died within the facility insisting that succumbed to his illness while receiving treatment.
“I want to say this, the prisoner did not die in prison…he died at Moi Referral Hospital in Voi after he was taken in ill…he did not die at Manyani, those are just but rumors,” he said.
Manyari prisoners raised concerns have been over the alleged mistreatment of inmates at the facility after the morning protest.
According to the prisoners, Kabanzu’s death could have been avoided had the situation been handled early enough.
The protests came a day after clinical officers joined the nurses and doctors on the ongoing industrial strike in Taita Taveta County public medical facilities.
