I am a staff at Equity bank. I have been working with them on contract terms for 2years and 3 months I would like to share the exploitation that is being meted to us by the bank.
Our contracts were lapsing on 31st Dec 2021, having worked for so long with the institution, we thought that they would confirm us to permanent staff.
However, we received a shock that we are being laid off and being replaced by ELPs (wings to fly scholars)
More worse, our contracts were extended for 10 days lapsing on 10th January 2021 just to allow them to handle the back to school pressure. Below is the email from General Manager Operations Miringu Ng’ang’a to all branch managers

Subject: DECEMBER BRANCH OPERATIONS CONTRACTS STAFF -change of exit date to 9/01/2021Dear colleagues,
It is our hope that this finds you well and keeping safe.
Following your staff requests through your Regional GMs, we are working on modalities of recalling ELPs who have completed college and have worked with us before to cover gaps in various branches. Our intention is to have them report in various branches between Monday and Tuesday next week.
We are cognizant of the fact that next week is expected to be very busy due to the ‘back to school’ activities. To manage this, we have agreed to extend the current contracts, which were expected to lapse on 31st December 2020, by an extra week to allow for a smooth transition between the incoming staff and the current staff without interrupting the smooth flow of customer service.
Have joyful holiday season full of God’s blessings

“Most of these entitled axed bankers are graduates. That’s why they don’t like it when the Eagle to Fly scholars work in the bank. But truth be said, Equity invests shareholder money to educate the less fortunate in the society. So there should be a return on the investment.
Actually, these boys n girls are eager to work, polite and techno-savvy. Not even close to these permanent employees who feel entitled just because are putting on a tie and the coat,” a source said.
My take.
Contracts can be terminated/have an expiry date. If you are in such arrangements and knew it was a 2 yr contract plan B is a must. Start looking for alternatives or another job 3-6 months prior.
