Earlier this year, after alleged misappropriation of county funds, a fire engulfed a section of Kisumu county finance offices at Prosperity House on Sunday evening destroying documents in the finance and planning office that also houses directors of budgeting, accounting services, revenue and supply chain management.
Finally cracking the whip, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o who was away in Abu Dhabi for the World Urban Forum during the happenings, has now sacked his minister for Education, ICT, and Human Capacity Development John Obiero Ogone and sent several senior staff from the Education and Procurement departments on compulsory leave.
“The seven persons will proceed on compulsory leave following instructions from the county secretary,” the governor stated Monday morning.
The county boss nominated former Kenya Secondary School Heads Association National chairman Mr John Obiero Awiti, to replace Mr Ogone.
The changes, sources say, could be a result of the misappropriation of the county’s Sh205 million bursary kitty. Other Sources suggest that the reshuffling was brought about because of the misappropriation of some Sh42 million meant for the school feeding programme.
Ogone said his sacking was a surprise because there was no prior warning, “It was a big surprise. I couldn’t establish what went wrong. No one also informed me that this was coming,” he said
The governor has been very vocal about his reform agenda in the government and within the department of finance specifically.
