On 11th March 2011, Japan experienced another worse nuclear disaster
The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant in Ōkuma, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan leaked radioactive materials into the surrounding areas including the sea.
Kenya is a huge importer of second hand cars from Japan and this is where the worry is.
Three years after the Fukushima nuclear accident, Kenya signed a contract with Quality Inspection Services Inc Japan (QISJ) to inspect vehicles that were being imported into Kenya.
At the time is the signing, QISJ had been banned by the Japan Harbour Transportation Association (JHTA) had de-registered QSIJ for incompetence.
JHTA noted that QISJ wasn’t capable of inspecting vehicles for radioactive materials and therefore it remained banned.
However, for officials at the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), this was their chance to cut deals and also make money with QISJ.
Imagine vehicles coming from a country that had poisoned fish, meat, and products. Most of all, Japanese car products are used by Kenyans en masses. Other countries banned imports from Japan because of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant disaster but not Kenya.
‘It is a disaster as people are being poisoned slowly without knowing, as some vehicle manufacturers /owners dumped those radioactive vehicles in Kenya’, an expert who wrote to kenyanbulletin.com wrote in part.
The reason most people don’t know that the used cars they bought from Japan is radioactive or not is because there are small doses of poisons.
This is because the long-term exposure to low doses of radiation increase the odds of getting cancer. Whereas high doses of radioactive substances would have been evident very fast due to the deterioration and quick damage to cells and tissues.
Ironically, chemotherapy is the same process where high doses of radiation is used to kill cancer cells.
Experts have in recent times faulted chemotherapy as a way of treating cancer.
However, I digress
Kenyans must be wary and look for alternative sources of vehicles such as those from Germany and United Kingdom instead of Japan.
Govt must move with speed to arrest KEBS MD Bernard Njiraini for poisoning Kenyans. QISJ also cjrged Kenyans an extra Sh4000 in inspection fees.
Imagine being killed but also being overcharged.
Remember, in 2011, a former MD KEBS Dr Kioko Mang’eli warned of highly dirty sugar being sold in the country, 7 years later we started seeing the rise in cancer cases.
KEBS must be disbanded and all those responsible jailed for life for lillig Kenyans first with suage and now with radioactive metals in form of vehicles from Japan.
