In Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha’s case, the apple did not fall far from the tree, as his son, Michael Augustus Achianja Magoha, also chose to trod a path similar to his father in regards to pursuing academic excellence.
The alumnus of Strathmore and Brookhouse School graduated from the University of Nairobi’s School of Medicine in 2009 and returned to study neurosurgery in 2011.
A lover of guitar and basketball Michael is a tutorial fellow at the Department of Surgery at UoN.
Magoha’s son also successfully attended elective placement in Vascular, Cardiothoracic and General Surgery at Groote Schuur Hospital, Faculty of Health Sciences, and University of Cape Town, South Africa in 2009.
He currently doubles as a Lecturer in Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery at UoN and a consulting surgeon at Kenyatta National Hospital.
It was the latter posting that landed him in a bit of trouble back in March 2018, after a botched surgery sparked public outrage.
Four medics -the neurosurgeon (Michael), ward nurse, theatre receiving nurse, and anaesthetist — were suspended for their alleged role in the surgery.
Magoha – who served as the chairman of the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board (KMPDB) quit the task force that was looking into the KNH blunder as a result of a conflict of interest.
Not to be left out of the family of doctors, Michael’s mum Dr Barbara O Essien Magoha is an obstetrician gynaecologist.
The holder of Master of Medicine (Obstetrics and Gynaecology) from the University of Nairobi is the Honorary Consular of Mali in Kenya, a lecturer at UoN and consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Kenyatta National Hospital.
Her son also served as the Senior House Officer in Surgery at the Aga Khan University Teaching Hospital back in 2011.
