Migori County Assembly has been closed indefinitely for the next 4 days after a staff tested positive for Covid-19.
Migori County leader of Majority Edward Ouma has confirmed to Kenyan Bulletin that the Assembly will remain shut down for 14 days while the member goes on self-quarantine as they wait for another test to be done.
“One of our staff from Kuria region has tested positive of Covid-19. This comes as a result of the test which was done by Migori County Health Department at the Assembly,” said Ouma.
Last week on Wednesday 20 MCAs and staffs in Migori queued at the county assembly to have their samples taken and tested for the virus.
“The mass test which was conducted by Migori County Health department targeted MCAs and Assembly staffs, we are asking other members who have not been tested to volunteer and have their samples taken,” said Ouma.
Ouma said that they have asked all the MCAs who have not gone for the test to go which he says that the test should be mandatory.
“We are not going to take chances after one of us have tested positive of Covid-19, people must be tested for us to be safer, for the staff who has tested positive has been taken to Macalda Migori County treatment center,” said Ouma
He added that members of Migori County Assembly have committed themselves to play a leading role in urging residents to maintain guidelines issued by the ministry of health to reduce the spread of the disease.
“We have encouraged members to turn up for the exercise because it is vital in helping with the Covid-19 response,” Ouma said.
Migori is a border town and is one of the Covid-19 hot spots in Nyanza region.
Yesterday, July 15, seven more patients succumbed to coronavirus in raising the death toll in Kenya to 209. The country has lately recorded a sharp increase in the number of infections which stood at 11,252 by July 15.
“We are saddened to announce that we have lost seven more patients to COVID-19,” said Dr Rashid Aman, a Chief Administrative Secretary at the Ministry of Health.
Dr Aman said 461 new infections were recorded on Wednesday fro 4,261 samples tested since Tuesday.
“On a positive note,” he said, “51 patients have been discharged after recovering from this virus.”
3,068 people have recovered from coronavirus since mid-March when the virus was first detected in the country, sending panic and grounding the economy.
Kenya remains on a night curfew imposed three months ago, until August 6 when President Uhuru Kenyatta will issue new directives.
