The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) board management has today issued a statement on the death of Lilian Waithera who was shot and killed in Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

In a communiqué, released on Thursday, February 16, NHIF asked Kenyans to avoid speculating about the death of Lilian Waithera.

“Our attention has been drawn by social media posts speculating her unexplained death. NHIF wishes to advise the members of the public to avoid speculation and to allow relevant investigative authorities to conclusively handle the matter surrounding her untimely death,” the statement read in part.

NHIF dismissed the claims that Waithera might have been killed after exposing a Ksh 1 billion case involving a former senior employee by the name of Geoffrey Mwangi.

“Furthermore, the Fund would like to reiterate that Mr. Geoffrey Mwangi is not the Chief Executive Officer of NHIF as alleged in a report making rounds on social media,” part of the statement read.

Waithera passed away on Monday, February 13 night after she was shot by an unknown gunman in Nairobi CBD.

According to an autopsy report by the police, a bullet lodged in Waithera’s lungs led to her death.

“The female NHIF staff who collapsed and died along Kaunda Street on Monday evening had been shot from an elevated angle. An autopsy revealed the bullet was lodged in her lungs.

“The bullet entered through the collar bone having been fired from an elevated angle,” police stated.
