Shocking revelations have emerged in the murder case where Ms Maryann Mumbi and one Calvin Okoth are accused of killing international rugby player Mike Okombe.

The murder took place in Kiamunyi, Nakuru County where the celebrated athlete had been invited to a birthday party. witnesses say conflict originated from a botched truth or dare game.

While testifying against her husband, Milka Njoki who is Calvin Okoth’s wife narrated to the High Court how her husband had picked a quarrel with Okombe during her son’s birthday party.

“The two were outside the house when a quarrel ensued. Okoth forced Okombe out of our home,” she said, while describing her husband as a very violent person.

High Court judge Joel Ngugi, however, shut down the testimony citing Section 127 of the Evidence Act, which deals with competency of spouses as witnesses. “A wife can’t testify against her husband unless she does a formal application. The aim of this is to protect marriage as an institution,” he said.

Ms Mumbi is accused of stabbing Okombe after the co-accused Mr Okoth severely beat him with a club before recklessly driving him to the hospital resulting in his demise on November 4, 2017.

The accused are out on a Sh500,000 bond. The hearing of the case will proceed on September 26.
