President Uhuru Kenyatta has mourned 11 General Service Unit officers killed when the vehicle they were travelling in ran through a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) along Damajare Harehare road near the Kenya-Somalia border. The President promised the bereaved families of his support during the mourning period.
“The President sends his heartfelt condolences and sympathies to the families of the departed Officers and assures them of Government support during this difficult period of mourning,” reads a statement dispatched by State House Spokesperson Kanze Dena.
He further said the country will not bow down to vows sustained anti-terror fight.
“The President sends a strong reminder to all misguided elements out to compromise the safety and security of Kenyans across the country that the Government and the people of Kenya will never succumb to their cowardly terrorist actions,” Dena added.
The officers from the Harhar GSU camp lost their lives at Degow on the road between Liboi and Damajale close to the Kenya-Somalia border as they were conducting a routine security patrol at around 4 pm.
The officers were escorting one of their seniors headed to Liboi where he was to take over while another colleague was on leave.
“The vehicle struck by the IED was severely damaged,” Mutyambai said.
An incident report filed at the Liboi Police Station indicated the police Land Cruiser was ran though the explosive device planted on the road at about 4 pm.
“A joint patrol of Kenya Defence Forces, Administration Police, Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit (RBDU), and regular police,” the report indicated.
