Waiguru explains why she supported Raila in the recent Kibra by-elections

Kirinyanga Governor Anne Waiuguru on Tuesday revealed why she supported the ODM candidate in the Kibra by-election despite being a Jubilee party member.

Speaking to Citizen TV’s Newsnight show, Waiguru said supporting the ODM leader Raila Odinga in drumming up support for Bernard Okoth, alias Imran was akin to supporting the handshake.

She, however, dismissed reports indicating that the Kibra race was a life and death matter for Jubilee Party.

“What took me to Kibra was the handshake…Post the handshake, we find ourselves in a unique political space…Kibra was not really a matter of life and death for Jubilee,” she said.

Waiguru joined the ODM leader at campaign rallies in Kibra mini polls that had gained ‘national status’ following the entry of heavy political heavyweights in the campaigns.

Political pundit labelled the by-election as a rehearsal for 2022 presidential elections after Deputy President William Ruto, Raila, ANC’s Musalia Mudavadi, potential presidential candidates come 2022, locked horns as they campaigned for their candidates.

Pundits argue that Waiguru, who in all appearances has fallen out with the DP, seemingly sided with Raila to position herself as a potential presidential running mate.

The Kirinyaga boss once had a bitter exchange with Raila during her time as a Cabinet Secretary for Devolution following corruption allegations that pitted the governor.

The two, however, buried the hatchet and have been working closely politically.

Some analysts have feted her as a potential running mate to Raila come 2022.

However, Waiguru told Citizen Tv on Tuesday that she is hopeful that she is a frontrunner in the 2022 race.
