Late Prof. Ogutu’s family drama intensify ahead of the burial

There was drama at the Bondo sub-county hospital mortuary on Monday evening before autopsy on the late Prof Gilbert Ogutu as his family members were engaged in a scuffle that nearly turned physical.

The confrontation was between Prof Ogutu’s relatives and his second wife Imelda Ogutu and her son Timothy Ogutu delayed the exercise by close to thirty minutes.

After the procedure was done, government pathologist Dr Dickson Muchama promised to release the autopsy results in three weeks.

But this did little to calm the situation, more drama could be in the offing after the second wife promised to file a police report in a bid to have the relatives who caused the commotion before of the autopsy arrested.

“I have talked to the police who were present during the confrontation at the mortuary and I will make a report at the Bondo police station and record a statement over the same. I want them arrested,” said Imelda Ogutu.

Confrontation began when pathologist arrived a few minutes to 7pm and called the widow and the investigating officer for a meeting and left the don’s two daughters outside.

Led by Mr Kennedy Oduor, Prof. Ogutu’s relatives confronted the pathologist and Ogutu’s wife, accusing them of sidelining the late’s two daughters from the first wife.

“We are reading malice in this whole thing and we demand inclusivity in the process because we suspect foul play in the professor’s death,” Oduor said.

The family waited for the pathologist from 3pm and that long wait added to the suspicion and tension between the two factions of the family.

After the autopsy, the body was moved to the Aga Khan Hospital mortuary in Kisumu to awaiting burial arrangements that were to kick off the following day.

Professor’s body was found in a kneeling position on Sunday morning by his worker. A piece of cloth was tied around  his neck and the other end tied to the window in his bedroom. Police suspects that he committed suicide.

His wife said the family was shocked by the sudden death of the 78-year-old as she said he was fine and they had traveled to the village together.
