Forty-nine journalists were killed across the globe in 2019. Reporters Without Borders have said this is the lowest death toll since 2003.
Most of the reporters died covering conflicts in Yemen, Syria and Afghanistan. The French watchdog said, warning that journalism still remains a dangerous profession.
On average of 80 journalists lose their lives every year over the last twenty years.
RSF head Christophe Deloire also warned that the number of journalists being killed in peaceful countries is still alarmingly high, with 10 dying in Mexico alone.
Latin mAmerica remains as deadly as Middle East with 14 journalists killed across the continent.
While the fall in the number of fatalities in conflict zones was something to celebrate, Deloire maintained that more and more journalists are being killed for doing their work in democratic countries, which is a real threat to democracy as many journalists still end being imprisoned.
In October 2018, Jamal Khashoggi, an Arabian columnist and author was murdered in Saudi Arabian embassy in Istanbul, Turkey. Saudi Arabia is notorious for abusing press freedom, jailing and ending lives of journalists.
