Kenyan midfielder Victor Wanyama, striker Michael Olunga and Jesse Were joined hands by contributing funds to help their injured colleague Philemon Otieno undergo surgery.
Otieno has been out of the pitch since he picked an injury in August 4 when he prominently featured for the national team in a CHAN qualifier against Tanzania. Despite picking up an injury on international duty, the federation did not keep its word to have him undergo surgery in France, with FKF maintaining that they lacked funds.
After months of impasse between the federation and his club Gor Mahia, Otieno eventually underwent the surgery at the Kenyatta National Hospital last week.
The promising utility player had no otherwise but to reach out to his national team mates to help raise money for his treatment.
His club Gor Mahia was not happy the move and maintained that FKF should have footed the bills.
According to Gor’s Chief Executive Lodvick Aduda, Wanyama, Olunga and Were joined forces with the Kenya Footballers Welfare Association(KEFWA) by chipping in to save the career of Otieno. Surgey needed a fee of Sh450,000.
