Government Revises Expressway design after public uproar

The state has revised the design of an expressway from JKIA to Westlands  that is planned to pass through the capital, Nairobi. This is after a public outcry that the project mess up parts of famous recreational park, Uhuru park.

The four-lane dual carriageway will cost Sh61 billion and will run over 27km from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport western part of the city. This move is expected to ease traffic congestion from the main airport to western sides of town.

The project is funded by a Chinese firm which is expected to recoup its investment with road tolls.

Kenyans were angered by revelations that 0.5 hectares of Uhuru Park would be taken off. The project that was launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta two weeks ago will now leave out Uhuru Park.
Kenya National Highways Authority struggled to defend the initial plan but majority were not convinced. Uhuru Park had to be protected in honor and memory of the late Nobel Prize winner, Prof Wangari Maathai who fought for the preservation of the park.
