A couple been charged with failing to file correct tax returns for four years.
Joseph Ouma and Rebeca Akinyi, proprietors of Jomoyosh Contractors, are accused of making false statements in their income tax returns amounting to Sh42,286,603.
Mr Ouma is facing nine counts of filing incorrect tax returns amounting to Sh41,087,414 while Akinyi is accused of allegedly failing to file Sh1,199,189 in tax returns in the periods between 2015 and 2019.
The couple denied the charges before Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate Vincent Adet.
Ouma was released on a Sh2 million bond while his wife was released on a Sh1 million bond or cash bail of Sh200,000
Ouma entered the incorrect figures between January and June this year on tax returns for 2018 and reduced Jomoyosh Contractors tax liability to Sh6,476,594.
Between January 15 and June 30 2018 Ouma filed incorrect statements of his income tax returns for the year 2017 to reduce his company’s corporate tax liability by over six million shillings.
He is also facing charges of reducing his company’s tax bill in the two previous years.
His wife was charged that in June, 2016 she defaulted on her tax obligations when she failed to file and remit her income taxes for year 2015.
The pretrial hearing on the case will be held on December 9.
