Sonko and his co accused record conflicting statements with the Anti –graft body
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and a city contractor whose firms were used to siuphon funds from have recorded conflicting statements with the Ehics and Anti Corruption Commission.
The governor and Antonthy Mwaura of Hardi Enterprises and Toddy Engineering recorded statements over investigations into corruption allegations involving the governor, senior officials from his administration and a number of questionable companies.
Sources at the Integrity Centre revealed that their files are ready and will be forwarded to the office of the DPP Noordin Hajji for prosecution anytime.
Paper trails by the anti graft detectives show how Sonko pocketed sh39 million from several companies, some of which wired money to his accounts prior to 2017. This according EACC, amounts to conflict of interests.
Documents filed by EACC assistant director in charge of forensics Simon Cherpka, the governor denies personally knowing Mr Mwaura whose firm (Hardi Enterprises) was paid shs 357 million between October 11 2018 and march 13 2019. The dubious payments were made for garbage collection.
Maura then transferred sh 58 million to Toddy Engineering Company that he admitted he co-owns with his wife Rose Mwaura. Documents further show that on December 17, Mwaura wired sh3million to Sonko’s account at the Equity Bank.
Sonko denied knowing Mwaura of Hardi Enterprises but he knows Mwaura of Toddy Engineering, whom he admitted he has done business with in the past.
He also admitted that Mwaura financed his campaigns in the run up to 2017 polls.
Investigations also discovered that apart from the sh3million, Mwaura had sent the governor another sh8.6 million before he was elected in 2017.
Mwaura claims the money included sh. 5 million which was a down payment for the land the land Sonko was buying along Mombasa road. Sonko was to buy the land and give him his share for the money he paid him.
In his statement, Sonko claims he had never met Mwaura but has had telephone converstions with him involving garbage collection services.
Mwaura when asked about his relationship with Sonko denied having any personal or business relationship with the governor.
And abot the sh 3 million he transferred to the governor’s Equity Bank account on December 17 , he claimed it was advanced to pay Sonko for a land he leased from him to park heavy equipment in Kwale.
Mwaura also noted that the lease was for three years but he had not moved to the site. A statement Sonko contradicted saying the lease was to run for two years.
According to Cherpka, ‘it is now evident that Sonko and Mwaura have a history pecuniary support and business associations which they have extended to fraudulent transactions with the county government during Sonko’s term’ read part of his statement.
