A major Health burden in a Pandemic

Mental health is seriously taking toll on our already dangling lives in a damaged economy.

Everthing is falling apart in a society and generation that is less aware of the negative effects nor their own state of mental health.

Yesterday, a quinquagenarian woman has jumped from the rooftop of their home to her death.

The report of the 51-year-old woman taking her own life was reported at Stapol Kabete.

Mental health is something that this goverment has been overlooking and its effects are unfortunately taking toll.

Worsened with job losses and financial crunch in every sector in an economy that 95 percent of livelihoods depend on a career.

With, seems to be never ending effects of these lockdowns. One can only foresee many more of this if we’re not cushioned by this, if we have any sober, government.

The task-force on mental health reported that in the last few years Kenya has witnessed an unprecedented number of people and families adversely affected by poor mental health.

It is estimated that at least 25 per cent of outpatients and 40 per cent of inpatients in different health facilities across the country present symptoms of mental illness.

Sadly, unlike other illnesses, the greatest impact of mental ill health does not lie solely in the number of fatalities, but from the number of years lived with the untold suffering.

About 800,000 people die from suicide each year (that is one person every 40 seconds), majority of them aged 15-29 years, in which age-group suicide is the second leading cause of death according to the World Health OrganiSation (WHO).

In Kenya, WHO estimates that due to poor state of mental health, 1408 people commit suicide yearly, translating to four deaths daily.

According to the African Population Health and Research Centre (APHRC) official statistics on suicide in Kenya may be impossible to obtain owing to under-reporting or misreporting of such deaths, seeing as attempting to commit suicide is criminalised.

My Advice.

Every human being went through issues to be where we are. When everything you have or thought you have fall apart, know that you were created with a superior spirit. You were the superior sperm from the millions that were swimming towards the oocyte(egg) that made you.

Before you cut short that journey, that spirited fight, think of the person in ICU fighting for his/her breath. Is it worth taking what you can get by the grace of the Super Spirit?

Think of that young brother, sister, cousin, nephew, niece everyone that hopes your life changes theirs!

Think of that person in wheel chair, in the theatre, think of those infected with COVID-19! Keep  fighting in there!

Think of of you. What you can do with everything your spirit has been fighting for since day one.

Taking your life will not be the best solution to the problem were having. Keep fighting to make things better, to make yourself and the lives of others better.
