Wundanyi Member of Parliament Danson Mwashako stormed a local police station to demand the release of his supporters who had been arrested for breaching Covid-19 protocols.
The supporters, on Friday, December 11, held a political rally that was disrupted by the police.
Chaos would erupt after the supporters clashed with the police officers.
Reports indicate that three people, including Wundanyi OCS Shadrack Mumo, sustained injuries as a result of the scuffle.
The MP also accused the police officers of seizing mobile phones, and other equipment from his supporters.
“Even after disrupting my rally, the police arrested and tear-gassed me and my supporters.
“They seized mobile phones from my supporters, chairs, tables, and public address equipment and detained them at the station,” Mwashako noted.
He alleged that a section of the police officers had overstayed at Wundanyi Police Station, adding that he would file a petition to the Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai to have all of them transferred.
In response to the MP’s claims, Taita Sub-County Police Commander Onesmus Kombe noted that the rally had gone against Covid-19 protocols.
President Uhuru Kenyatta, on Wednesday, November 4, revised the Covid-19 containment measures in a bid to control the second wave of the virus.
He suspended all political gatherings and rallies for a period of 60 days and ordered that anyone who may wish to hold such a meeting ought to do so in town halls with strict observance of Covid-19 protocols.
Furthermore, he noted that the meetings would be limited to a third seating capacity of the town halls.
The directive came after a section of top political players had heightened up political campaigns in a bid to further their agenda.
Political rallies such as the Building Bridges Initiative campaigns had gathered steam hence causing scores of people to attend the events without observing the Covid-19 regulations.
A similar incidence occurred when police officers disrupted Deputy President William Ruto’s rally in Nyamira.
This saw the DP supporters scampering for safety as police officers lobbed teargas on them. The heavily armed men in uniform noted that the meeting had been declared illegal.
