Animal Farm: Secret Letter on ‘VIP’ quarantine embarrasses Ministry of Health

Mutahi Kagwe, Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Health

The Ministry of Health (MoH) where sh1.3 billion has already been misused to fight the novel coronavirus (covid-19) is the subject of ridicule this afternoon after a letter written and signed by the acting head of the directorate of Public Health Dr Francis Kuria was leaked online.

The letter approves special quarantine status for a Ms Lucy Muthoni Kambuni to the chagrin of Kenyans online.

“The above named person is scheduled to travel from London onboard a Kenya Airways flight KQ0103 on 4th May 2020. She has been tested and is COVID-19 negative. Approval has been granted for her to quarantine at home in Runda Estate House No. 589.”, the letter stated in part.

Though the government through the MoH Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe has often stated that everyone travelling from abroad must be taken to quarantine for 14 days after which a second test to determine if they are covid-19-free is done, Ms Kambuni’s case seems to be a breaking of that law.

Kenyans have christened the selective application of the law as an Animal Farm, mirroring George Orwell’s famous book on the degeneration of human society using pigs as an example.

Upon arrival in Kenya, Lucy Muthoni Kambuni was chauffeured using government vehicles used by NIS or DCI on secret missions, owing to the double number plate (GK B 044M (KCQ 007Z).

Is this the start of home-based care instead of being taken to dilapidated and dirty quarantine centers?

Kenyans may never know, but as time goes by, Covid-19 is increasingly being made to appear like it is a common-man disease. The poor suffer the most.
