Bar Owner Trevor Ombija Schooled On Noise Pollution
TV Journalist Trevor Ombija when he spoke at a stakeholder’s meeting bringing together Nairobi bar owners and residents

Citizen TV news anchor Trevor Ombija is on the receiving end of major social media flack following his skewed remarks on noise pollution.

The TV presenter, who reportedly owns the Samaki Samaki Seafood and Jazz restaurant, spoke when he attended a meeting between bar and restaurant owners and residents in Kileleshwa.

Ombija noted that although plausible measures are being enforced to resolve the noise problem, some residents look hell-bent on frustrating bar owners.

“I have a neighbour who wanted us to shut down because I did not give her a landscaping job.

We reduced our volume completely all other neighbours were okay with our attempts, except her so I offered to go the extra mile of soundproofing as a last resort she still refused.”

He further argued that if a bar is near a residential area, more than half of the residents should be able to raise complaints about noise pollution for the matter to be addressed.

He also proposed that those being affected by the noise to soundproof their houses, which did not go down well with most Kenyans.

“This particular neighbour of mine, I even offered to soundproof her house.

I started with her room and she said no, it has to be the entire house.

And I said fine, for me to get any soundproofing I need to get a permit from the county government, show me your lease, get a confirmation from your landlord and if they are okay with it, I am going to do that,” he said.

Ombija was responding to Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai who has been castigating club owners on noise pollution.

Their exchange comes weeks after 43 clubs in Nairobi were shut down over noise complaints.

But surprisingly, some joints are already back in operation.
