Activist Boniface Mwangi has stepped in to defend Nairobi Central Police Station OCS Dishon Angoya after police arrested him for releasing 64 protesters detained during Monday’s fuel strike demonstrations.

The arrest has quickly turned Angoya into a trending figure online, with many Kenyans praising him for what they describe as protecting innocent protesters during the chaotic unrest sparked by rising fuel prices.

Mwangi revealed that a team of lawyers is preparing to represent the officer in court. He said OCS Dishon Angoya, who is currently receiving treatment at Lang’ata Hospital, remains calm and ready to fight the case.

“He is in good spirits and says he is ready to go to court,” Mwangi said.

Boniface Mwangi accused President William Ruto’s government of targeting the officer for respecting the constitutional right to protest. He also claimed Angoya acted under instructions from senior police commanders before releasing the suspects.

Online, hundreds of Kenyans have continued sending financial support to the officer through mobile money, with many calling him “a hero in uniform.”

The controversy comes after nationwide protests erupted over a sharp increase in fuel prices announced by EPRA. The demonstrations paralysed transport in several towns and turned violent in some areas. Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed that four people died while hundreds were arrested during the unrest, and dozens were injured.

Boniface Mwangi has now urged the ODPP Renson Mulele Ingonga and the Judiciary not to approve what he called politically motivated charges against the officer OCS Dishon Angoya.
