Breaking covid-19 rules is now 15k for VIPs

Kasipul MP Charles Were was on Wednesday morning arraigned in court and charged with breaking COVID-19 regulations. The lawmaker who pleaded guilty to charge was released after paying Sh15,000 fine.

Were’s case comes a day after Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja also pleaded guilty to similar charges in a Nairobi Court and was released after paying sh15,000 fine.

He was arrested on saturday morning, went into hiding for the rest of weekend, recorded a statement at Kilimani Police Station on Monday and was arraigned in court on tuesday.

Hon. Were was arrested on Tuesday night, July 21, at the chief’s camp in Oyugis town where he was allegedly distributing sanitisers to the residents.

The crowd that Were’s presence had pulled was not observing social distancing rules and other health regulations introduced to prevent the spread of covid-19.

Both Were and Sakaja pleaded guilty and later apologised to the public for their uncouth approach to the rule of law and disregarding of the very same messages Sakaja preached to Kenyans in a video produced with his kids months ago.
