Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has fired back at the individuals responsible for vandalising a road sign named after him in Kileleshwa.
The sign post was yesterday night burned down by unknown individuals weeks after it was vandalised.
In a statement, Atwoli said that bringing down an honorary road signage under his name doesn’t hurt him.
“On the flip side, it will haunt, for life, those who are behind it. For how does it benefit them? How do you sleep at night knowing you are a vandal?” He said.
According to Atwoli, the signage was an act of honour bestowed to him by Nairobi County taking into account his many years of service.
“My name is all over the world and one doesn’t require a street signage for them to know who Francis Atwoli is. The name will live in posterity taking into account my years of selfless service to the workers in Kenya and the world, “ he added.
The vandalization comes a day after Atwoli was re-elected for a record fourth time as a Member of the International Labour Organization (ILO) governing body in Geneva, Switzerland, for the period 2021-2024.
Nairobi City County named the street, that was formerly known as Dik Dik road, Francis Atwoli road in honour of the trade unionist in May.
Deputy Governor and acting Governor, Ann Kananu said the road has been renamed in recognition of Atwoli’s contribution and agitating for the rights of the Kenyan workers in the last 54 years.
This brought about public uproar, Kenyans admonished the City Hall administration for what they termed as a “joke of the year” considering Kenyan global icons have never been honoured.
