Mariam Abdalla Bunu, a Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) nominee was on Tuesday arrested.
This happened at the Malindi International Airport while flying to Nairobi to face an interviewing committee for the post with Sh2.7 million in cash.
According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Mariam, the Chief Officer for Finance at Tana River County failed to declare the cash in her cargo as required by airport rules.
EACC says that it received an intelligence report that a senior official from the Tana River County Government had been intercepted at the Malindi Airport airport with unexplained money. A team of EACC detectives rushed to the scene and confirmed the incident.
“According to the documents that she was carrying, the Chief Officer was traveling to Nairobi for official duty. OCS Malindi Airport Police Station, C.I.P Hermann Ndegwa informed the EACC team that they had earlier arrested the suspect while in possession of unexplained and undeclared cash amounting to KES 2.7 Million,” EACC said.
The EACC said it suspected that the money was corruptly obtained from Tana River County. Bunu who was released on an Sh100,000 cash bail was later left to travel to Nairobi where she is supposed to be interviewed on Monday for a CAS post.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) began interviewing candidates for the CAS positions yesterday. A total of 240 candidates from more than 4,000 who applied were shortlisted. They are all squaring off for the 22 available slots.
Bunu is according to the schedule released by PSC supposed to appear before the interviewing panel on Monday at 12 noon.
