CCTV footage capturing the shooting of National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) staff member, Lilian Waithera, along Kaunda Street on Monday, February 13 has finally been retrieved.
The footage, which was obtained on Friday February 17, shows Lilian walking alongside her colleague Damaris Achieng’ on a pavement next to a bank situated along the street at 5:12 pm.
Shortly after, the duo crosses the road to the other side of Kaunda Street.
Three seconds after 5:13 pm, Lilian – wearing a black sweater- is seen coming to an abrupt stop and moving backwards as she looks down.
There were two black vehicles around the murder scene.
She is then pulled by the roadside and collapses at the parking zone.
“We did not see blood on her clothes, it was oozing from her mouth,” Florence Gichuki, an eyewitness recounted.
Ms Gichuki said they did not know the exact cause of her collapse, even though her colleague had told them to call for an ambulance for a friend who had been shot.
“A lady came to our door and said that someone had been shot and that we should call an ambulance for her. We all panicked and ran outside to see what happened,” a shopkeeper on the street stated.
The incident that moment later attracted a crowd.
As the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) detectives work around the clock to unfold the mystery, it was evident from the CCTV footage that people around say they did not hear gunshots.
The CCTV footage shows an ambulance arrived 25 minutes after Ms Waithera collapsed.
On Thursday, DCI detectives from the forensic ballistics unit sealed off the scene to scrutinise the possible cause of the death.
It took a post-mortem to reveal that Ms Waithera, 46, had been shot. Initially, a police report had called it a “sudden death”.
She had walked from her place of work in Upper Hill and was heading home when she collapsed.
“The trajectory of the bullet is from above meaning that there was a high possibility that there was someone laying in wait. What we should try to piece together is whether that was her normal route every day,” Musamali explained.
