Chebukati hits out at Raila and the BBI brigade

The Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Wafula Chebukati, has hit out at ODM leader Raila Odinga and the entire BBI brigade as he accused them of turning the electoral body into  boogeyman.

“The IEBC makes reference to the contents of the Report of the Steering Committee on the implementation of the BBI and notes that it has been singled out as the only Independent Commission and indeed entity whose establishment is sought to be removed by way of the proposed changes in the Report.” Chebukati said in a statement.

He accused Raila of always leading an onslaught against the Commission after every general election since 1992.

After losing the 2017 polls, Raila resorted to calls for the overhaul of the IEBC to prevent rigging.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga are banking on the BBI report to expand the executive and parliament. It also aims to overhaul the IEBC to end ‘rigging’.

Raila claims that rigging is one of the root causes of post-election violence in every election cycle as banks on the individuals he accused of ‘rigging’ him out in 2013 and 2017.

The Building Bridges Initiative spearheaded by the two leaders seeks to remove the provision for an IEBC vice-chairperson to act when the chairman is away.

The document if adopted, will introduce new election laws wants where members of the electoral commission will be barred from executing the chairperson’s roles duties.

Currently the law allows the vice-chairperson to act as the chairman in case of a vacancy at the office of the chairperson until the position is filled.
