Chief killed in tragic accident involving a police boss

A chief has lost his life after getting involved in a horrific accident with a senior police officer along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Lalo Lugho, who served at Chengoni Sub-location, met his tragic death on the evening of Saturday, May 16, at Maji ya Chumvi area of Kwale County.

The chief was reportedly on his motorcycle when he was hit by the car that was being driven by the officer.

Confirming the incident, Mariakani Police Sub-county Commander Ezekiel Chepkwony explained that the incident happened after the driver lost control following mechanical problems.

“This was an accident like any other. It wasn’t intentional. The car developed a mechanical problem.

“We have instituted investigations and once concluded the law will take its course,” stated Chepkwony.

Lugho was en route to his home at around 6 p.m. after leaving work when the incident happened.

He was carrying a passenger, Nanje Nangoni, who was admitted at Mariakani Hospital for treatment after he sustained injuries.

The action angered the area’s residents who clobbered a colleague who was in the car with the police officer causing him injuries on the head as well as legs.

The accident added to a growing list of accidents since a nationwide dusk-to-dawn curfew was instituted by President Uhuru Kenyatta as motorists rushed home in the evenings to beat the curfew.

Several incidents of motorists injuring officers at roadblocks have been reported.

In mid-April, a police constable was killed after being run over by a speeding car at the Salgaa Roadblock along the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

The man was reportedly also trying to beat the curfew when the incident happened.
