The Co-operative Bank of Kenya has partnered with Aqua for All, Water.org, and the Water & Sanitation Services Provider Association (WASPA) to advance water and sanitation initiatives throughout Kenya. This collaboration aims to bridge critical gaps in water access, benefitting urban, peri-urban, and rural communities.
Under this partnership, Aqua for All will facilitate the allocation of KES 500 million in financing from Co-op Bank, targeting at least 15 water infrastructure projects. These efforts are expected to provide safe drinking water and improved sanitation to approximately 50,000 people, addressing Kenya’s pressing challenges in water accessibility.
Aqua for All, a non-profit dedicated to sustainable water financing, brings extensive experience in supporting similar initiatives, ensuring the partnership is aligned with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6, which emphasizes universal access to clean water and sanitation.
This initiative leverages private sector funding to support public needs, focusing on empowering water service providers to enhance infrastructure. WASPA’s involvement, as a representative of numerous water service providers, ensures on-the-ground technical support and strategic resource allocation. Water.org complements the partnership by applying its expertise in mobilizing capital and facilitating microfinance solutions for underserved areas.
The partnership’s impact extends beyond infrastructure. By improving access to clean water, it aims to boost health, productivity, and education outcomes while reducing the burden of water collection, particularly for women and children. The initiative supports economic growth and community empowerment, emphasizing long-term, sustainable solutions for Kenya’s water sector.
This collaboration sets a benchmark for how financial institutions and non-profit organizations can unite to address essential development challenges. Through targeted financing and expertise, it provides a roadmap for achieving sustainable development goals, improving quality of life, and fostering economic opportunities across Kenya.
