The Ministry of Health has signed a new cooperation agreement with Cuban Minister of Public Health that will see a brigade of 101 specialist Cuban doctors travel to Kenya.
In his three-week visit to Cuba, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe signed the cooperation with Cuban Minister of Public Health Dr. Jose Angel Portal Miranda as part of a medical exchange programme between Kenya and Cuba.
According to the Ministry, Mutahi’s visit is on a mission seeking to improve Kenya’s primary healthcare.
“The visit will also see the CS pick lessons from Cuba on the country’s world class primary health care delivery model, and its highly successful programme to combat malaria,” stated the Ministry.
The Cuban visit comes at a time when the government is looking to improve and strengthen Kenya’s primary healthcare system as a catalyst to achieving universal healthcare.
On June 17, 2020, a brigade made up of 20 Cuban doctors arrived in Nairobi to support the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
Cuban medical cooperation with Kenya started in June 2018 following the dispatch of 101 medical specialists to the country as part of a bilateral accord which has benefitted large sectors of the Kenyan population.
In March this year, President Uhuru Kenyatta acknowledged the assistance given to the country by the government of Cuba in the fight against Covid-19.
In delivering a report to the diplomatic community in Nairobi, the president thanked Cuba, saying that despite it being a small country with limited resources the government has always assisted the Kenyan people and government during the pandemic.
In turn, Cuba’s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez tweeted a message of gratefulness to the Kenyatta by stressing that Cuba will always stand by the peoples and government of Africa.
