The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) homicide detectives have commenced the second phase of investigations into the death of Geoffrey Mwathi Ngugi, alias Jeff, who died on February 22 under unclear circumstances.
On Friday, the DCI announced that it would question several persons of interest in the case and make appropriate recommendations to the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
The detectives said they are making good progress in the ongoing probe, having completed the first phase of investigations.
“The process included interviewing the first cluster of witnesses in the case, forensic examination of the scene, and retrieval of CCTV footage that captured the deceased’s last moments,” the DCI said.
Several other DCI Forensic experts assisting the Homicide investigators have also collected crucial evidence, which is being analyzed.
The DCI called on the public to be patient as the agency seeks to piece together the circumstances surrounding Mwathi’s death.
On March 10, the DCI detectives from the Homicide Department took over the investigations into Mwathi’s death following public uproar.
The detectives visited the building where Mwathi allegedly fell to his death from the 10th floor of Redwood Apartments along Thika Road following the directive from DCI boss Mohamed Amin and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki to expedite the probe.
The case was initially being handled by Kasarani police station, but public and family pressure forced authorities to conduct fresh investigations into the death that occurred under mysterious circumstances. The DCI maintained that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted.
“The public is assured that no stone shall be left unturned in the investigation of this case, and any person found to have been involved in the death shall face the full force of the law,” the DCI said.
