Desert locust destroying crops in Ethiopia may spread to Kenya, UN warns!

The UN has warned kenya that if the locust infestation in Ethiopia is not brought down, if faces danger of spreading to Kenya. Other neighboring countries that are under threat of ‘invasion Eriteria and Sudan.

Ethiopian Government is working out effective ways to control the insects already destroying crops in four states in Ethiopia. In Amhara State for instance, the locust have destroyed close to 100%.

there have been no sucessful efforts and the on going protests and insecurity has also affected efforts by Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO).

Fatouma Seid, FAO Representative in Ethiopia said the there is urgent need to act swiftly and mobilise the needed resources to scale up preventive measures.

There are media reports that the government sent out planes to spray insecticides to deal with problem from the air. The desert locusts have devoured crops mostly in Oromia, Amhara, Tigray and Somali states.

The FAO estimates that the insects were eating nearly 1.8 million tonnes of vegetation a day across 350 sq km (135 sq miles) of the country. If more measure to control the problem fails then it may spread from ethiopia to kenya, Eriteria and Sudan. The locusts spread from Yemen in the month of August.
