A group of Mount Kenya East leaders have threatened to ditch President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Jubilee party and form their own party ahead of 2022 General Election.
The leaders led by National Assembly Speaker Justin
Muturi and Meru governor Kiraitu Murungi threatened to leave the outfit and
‘walk alone’ if their counterparts from Mt Kenya West fail to support one of
their own for the presidency.
The leaders tasked the Meru Governor with a duty of coming up with a new political vehicle that would propel them to state house.
“There is a lot of confusion currently in Mt Kenya politics, and if we continue to get confused, we will lose in the national map as people from the East. The time has come for Meru, Tharaka Nithi and Embu counties to be at the centre of the transitional government. Our friends from the other side of GEMA need to back us now, and If they don’t, we will walk alone,” Kiraitu said.
The politicians spoke during Murungi’s thanksgiving ceremony in Nkubu for his healing from the COVID-19 disease.
Murungi who had earlier vowed to slow down on
politics after a near death experience with the respiratory illness said he was
comfortable with Muturi’s coronation as the new Mt Kenya spokesman.
Muturi who is yet to declare his political ambitions
said he would consult with Murungi on the political direction of the region.
The National Assembly speaker was coronated as the
Mt Kenya spokesperson on Saturday, May 22.
His crowning as Mt. Kenya leader divided the already
fragile community in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s backyard.
A section of politicians have cast doubt on Muturi’s
ability to lead the vast region with many saying he lacks the political
influence to do so.
