Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji has been elected as the new President of the Eastern Africa Association of Prosecutors (EAAP).

On Tuesday, he was elected President during the 10th AGM and Annual Conference in Kampala, Uganda.

In his acceptance speech, DPP Haji said that he would duly undertake to ensure that the objectives of the Association are met.

“This unique opportunity to serve as the President of the Association is a responsibility I will duly undertake to ensure that the objectives of the Association are met. I affirm my commitment to strengthening regional cooperation,” he said.

Haji also expressed its gratitude to the members of the EAAP and pledged to strengthen regional cooperation in the prosecution of transnational organized crimes.

EAPP is the regional body bringing prosecutors from Eastern African countries that aim to raise standards of professional conduct and ethics for African prosecutors and promote the rule of law, fairness, impartiality and respect for human rights and improve regional cooperation to combat crime.

Last year in September, Haji was also elected to represent Africa and the Indian Ocean Region at the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP).

As a member of the Executive Committee, the DPP would be able to advance innovative strategies to tackle Transnational Organized Crime (TOC) and enhance regional and international cooperation and collaboration in the prosecution of transnational organized crime.

Haji also received a certificate of merit for housing the 4th Africa and Indian Ocean region and the East Africa Association of Prosecutors (EAAP) conference in Mombasa early this year.

In  December 2021, Haji was named Jurist of the year by the International Commission of Jurists of Kenya (ICJ).

The election of the DPP and the awarding of the office is an acknowledgment of the critical place that Kenya occupies in the international criminal justice arena.

He was recognized as a visionary leader who has transformed the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution into one of the most responsive and independent offices to the needs of the people of Kenya.
