The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji has lined up 30 witnesses in the murder case against the vocal Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa and her co-accused Geoffrey Okuto.
Haji’s senior assistant DPP Alloys Kemo told the court that the prosecution has provided the defence with statements from 28 witnesses.
The remaining two statements were to be handed over to the lawyers representing the accused before the end of yesterday.
Mr Kemo who was in court yesterday assured Justice Anne Ongijo that he was committed to supplying the remaining documents before the end of the day.
Justice Ongijo is now in charge of criminal division in Mombasa and has taken over the case from Justice Njoki Mwangi, who was transferred to head family division.
She ordered the state to provide four witnesses for three consecutive days when the trial begins in February 2 2021.
Ongijo fixed the hearing date after defence lawyer Jared Magolo confirmed that they had already received 28 witness statements and that they were ready to proceed with the trial.
“The purpose of the mention is to confirm if we have been supplied with copies of witness statements to fix a hearing date. I am confirming we have already been supplied with 28 witness statements minus two,” Magolo said.
Hon. Jumwa and Okuto have been charged with the killing of Ngumbao Jola.
The deceased was shot after the Mp and her bodyguard stormed a meeting of ODM party agents prior to Ganda ward by-election in 2019.
