Dr. James Mworia’s 23-Year Journey in Centum Investment Company Plc
Centum CEO

When I joined Centum Investment Company Plc in 2001, I was just starting out, equipped with a law degree, an accounting diploma, and some certificates. I began as a filing clerk, eager and driven, with a strong desire to make a difference despite my limited experience.

My rise through the ranks at Centum wasn’t just about working hard; it was about my passion, persistence, and the connections I made. By 2005, I had become the Chief Investment Officer, a role that challenged me greatly. In December 2006, I left Centum to take on new challenges at Transcentury Investments as their Head of Investments.

In 2008, at the age of 30, I returned to Centum as CEO, which felt like coming back home. At the time, Centum managed assets worth $69 million. While that was respectable, I saw much greater potential. Over the next six years, my team and I grew our assets to $350 million, and today we manage $0.5 billion, with even more room for growth.

For me, Centum’s mission is personal. It’s about creating real wealth, not just for our investors but also for the communities we serve. Whether in Nairobi or Vipingo, I see our investments as transforming lives and creating opportunities, not just numbers on a spreadsheet.

Our investments in Real Estate, Private Equity, and Marketable Securities are more than just financial moves; they’re about building dreams and fueling economies. Projects like TRIFIC and the success of companies like Vipingo Development showcase our commitment to more than just optimizing assets.

Our achievements, including a 21% IRR on USD from exits and accounting for 25% of all exits in Kenya’s PE industry from 2013 to 2023, reflect our strategic approach. Yet, it’s the stories of resilience and innovation that truly inspire me.

Whether it’s a young man who found a job through our Ajiry program or professionals who began their careers at Centum, these moments remind me of the impact we’re making. Seeing companies we helped build continue to thrive is deeply satisfying, proving the strength of the foundations we laid.

My journey with Centum has been one of personal and professional growth. It’s taught me that success isn’t just about financial returns; it’s about creating something lasting with a team, something future generations can look back on with pride.

As I continue to lead Centum, I carry with me the lessons of the past 23 years. My story and Centum’s are intertwined, and together, we are investing in Africa’s future and its people.
